I guess it's Celtic week. Tonight we are attending a concert performance by the Royal Dragoon Guards and The Band of the Coldstream Guards at Jones Hall. We saw them once before at Edinburgh's Military Tattoo.
Before many performances, the Society of Performing Arts (SPA) has a few events. We arrived too late to listen to the talk, but manage to catch the tail end of the Celtic Chorus of Houston and the start of the McTaggart Irish Dancers performance n the lobby. We've seen these girls perform at the International Festival many years ago. The hair is all frizzed. The arms are held at their sides as their feet -- madly.
Jones Hall also serves dinner. It's to be of Scottish fare. Got haggis? Nope.
We saw few people in kilts. One lady looked hot in a thigh high kilt and boots. They sold even CDs of the individual performers.
The Guards had 36 performances in 22 states in 72 days traveling by bus and plane. The US flag is to the left and the UK flag to the right. No Scottish flag in sight.
The announcer was the same as the one at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. There were pipes and drums. They played Loch Lomond as well as Danny Boy. The dancers demonstrated their baton skills, the highland fling, and sword dance.
During intermission, the performers walk among the crowd and push their wares.
According to custom, the band has to request permission to bring the concert to an end in this case, it was from a representative of the British Embassy. The crowd was hushed waiting for his response when a woman spoke a defiant "No" .
At the end, they wanted a cheer from the crowd for a great performance. You can tell there were rennies in the crowd. Some said "Hip, Hip, Hurray" but many said "Hip,hip, Huzzah."
