Mon Oct 16, 2006 The Storm

Cool! My high school buddy Mike and his wife Lisa from Huntsville (Alabama that is. Huntsville in Texas has the State Prison) were planning to attend the Louisiana Renfest on Thanksgiving weekend, but they decided to go the following weekend so that they can hang out with us. Thanksgiving weekend would have given us three days of renfest but Jim goes to Dallas to be with family. I offered Mike garb, but he said that they would go mundane.

As Marshall signed off, Ben told me to take my ark home. He wasn't kidding. It poured HARD. This is what they referred to as a gully washer or a toad strangler. We tried taking Saturn Drive out the front gates of JSC, but vehicles started U-turning at the school. Not a good sign so we doubled back and took NASA Parkway. The traffic came to an absolute stop at the overpass, so we bailed on Kobayashi (yes, just like in Star Trek 2) and headed for Bay Area. That's when Cindy called and asked if Bay Area was safe. I told her that we were headed there. She had taken Fabian to the doctor and had been on the road for 2 hours. She told me to call back once I knew. Bay Area was okay, but the T-Mobile service was busy when I called back. Cindy was able to get through first, and I told her the good news.

Things weren't so good for us. The traffic backed up at where Beamer will eventually cross Bay Area so we tried the road which connects Baybrook Mall to El Dorado. It too was flooded. This was bad. We were running out of options. This was worse than when Tropical Storm Allison had flooded most of the Houston area in June 2001. An orange sunset hung beneath the clearing dark skies. We decided to have dinner and wait for the water to recede. By the time we entered Olive Garden, over an hour had passed. This trip should have only taken 20 minutes. When we finished dinner, we headed towards Bay Area. Traffic backed up at the same point, but this time a wrecker had its lights on and was turning towards the high water. Not a good sign. We had one last chance and entered the back side of the subdivision through 2351. Perfect! We made it home... From the news, we could see that many people were still struggling to make their way home.
